Holycross Soccer Club Notes November 7th 2010 Junior Team Newport 3 Holycross 5. With cup matches finished with. A big effort was needed to concentrate on the league. With 3 games in hand we needed to make a difference away to a strong Newport side. Holycross started much the brighter after some neat play, a cross come shot from niall brosnan hit the upright for ryan glynn(pushing away veteran ian hogan) to knock it in for our first. Holycross passing and playing well on one of the best pitches in the league, credit to newport. Ryan glynn and Micheal hennessy having loads of joy down the left wing. Five mins after the first aidan (bugsy) Moloney unloaded a screamer which whistled into the top corner and the cross were in cruise mode. We should have been 4 up after efforts from fish and damien griffin went amiss.2-0 halftime. Newport made a few changes at half time, and they worked as within 5mins of the restart they were level! defensive lapses cost Holycross dear. But timing is everything and from the restart damien griffin sent cross 3-2 up to regain the lead and confidence. A fourth goal came and griffin again from a well worked short corner dived low where nobody would even put a boot to header in the resultant cross. Newport never gave up and scored a free kick with 10mins to play. We finally saw off the newport revival when ryan glynn pounced on newports keepers indecision in his own box to calmly slot into the back of the net.3 valuable points. Holycross Soccer Club Notes April 19th 2009 A Team Unfortunately another loss on Saturday night and it looks like the die has fallen, and Division 2A football looms next season. Despite playing very well yet again the Cross went down by a 2-0 scoreline to Park Rangers, but when your luck is out it’s out. The Cross case wasn’t helped after two sendings off which could not be blamed in any way on the match official. With only a limited number of games remaining is difficult to see how the As will avoid the drop. B Team Success is coming late in the season for the Bs but welcome nevertheless. The divisional Cup quarter brought victory over Mungret Regional by a 4-2 score-line with Trevor Griffin and Kevin Purcell on the score-sheet with two apiece. Roll on the next round and best of luck to manager Dean Malone & Co. Under 13 Boys The 13s featured in an absolute thriller on Wednesday evening which ended in a 3-3 draw after a pulsating encounter. With both sides out of contention for season honours a free flowing game ensued but it was scoreless at the break. This would prove to be the calm before the storm however as the second half commenced. Winger Willie Maloney broke down the right wing before whipping in a superb cross which the inrushing Sean Finn blasted home. Dean Coughlan looked to have sown matters up with a trademark goal after leaving a trail of defenders in his wake. Rathkeale had different ideas however and as the Cross took their foot off the gas the visitors replied with three cracking goals. With the clock counting down Dean Coughlan dropped a twenty-five yard free kick into the path of Graham Whelan, who kept his head when all about him were losing theirs, and put a precision strike past the helpless keeper, 3-3, final whistle, and the home fans erupted! Well done to mentor-in-chief John Walsh and the entire crew for a terrific effort. Girls Under 10 Red Squad The U10s headed to Rathkeale on Saturday last for their Cup Semi-Final encounter versus Kilmallock. Both teams were already warming up on the pitch by 2.30 in eager anticipation, a whole 30 minutes before official kick-off time. The game got off at a quick pace which continued throughout the duration of the game. Ten minutes into the first half Kilmallock found the net to take the lead. In the second half Holycross had a number of scoring chances but were unlucky not to find the net. Dearbhla Egan in goals for Holycross had an outstanding game and showed she is a keeper of immense talent. At full time however, the score line was still Kilmallock 1 – Holycross 0. Congrats to our near neighbours who went on the win the Cup on the day. The team for Holycross on the day was: Rebecca Bevan, Marie Cronin (C), Katie Meade, Dearbhla Egan, Molly Patterson, Ide McCarthy, Anna Bonar, Jessica Murphy, Gillian Coleman and Marian Quaid. Well done to all of the team who showed great improvement with each game throughout the League and Cup tournament. Training will continue on Friday evenings from 7-8. One final match remains i.e. Mothers V’s Daughters and this year the Coach of the U10 girls will be donning her boots to help the Mothers out. All the two teams require on the day is a ‘brave referee’, any volunteers? Girls Under 10 Green Squad Our u-10 green team took part in a blitz last Saturday at Rathkeale. In beautiful sunshine the girls took the challenge of Murroe in their stride and played with great pride and courage throughout. The sides were very evenly matched with no quarter given by either team in the first half. Linda Farrell played her heart out in goal and made some great saves to keep the Cross in the running, with Shauna Ryan and Caitlin O’Hanlon defending superbly. Our midfield triumvirate of Eve Ryan, Katie Madden and Maire O’Leary were masterful and created great chances, skilfully setting up numerous chances for our superb forwards Siobhan Meany and Anna Leonard, who were in hard luck not to find the net on a number of occasions in the first half in particular. Half time arrived with the Cross unlucky not to be in front. The oranges however provided by supporter Eileen Finn seemed to be the required catalyst as the squad took to the field again with supreme confidence for the second half. Super subs Katie Finn and Aisling Hehir ran the length and breadth of the field to give a much-needed break to the midfielders and were unlucky not to score. Unfortunately Murroe scored shortly into the second half and followed up with another within a couple of minutes. Final score was 2-0 but this was not reflective of a match as we could easily have gone either way. An excellent all-round performance by all team members, and definitely a team to watch for the future. However player of the match has to go to Ciara Hynes who played a wonderful game when she came on as defender, producing a number of mazy dribbles to set up chance after chance for our front-runners, and very much reminiscent of dad Diarmuid in his hay-day! Previous Weeks Girls Under 10s Red Squad U10 Premier Girl’s team took to the pitch against Kilmallock on home turf. It has to be said the pitch conditions were anything but ideal but none-the-less the girls were ready to brave the elements. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a home referee and had to prevail on our Opponents Kilmallock to do the needful. Thanks to Tony for stepping in at no notice. The game was hotly contested from the outset and was a hugely entertaining match for the spectators. The first half saw the strong breeze was in Kilmallock's favour and they had a few good scoring chances. However, the steady hands of Dearbhla Egan in goals for the Cross kept the opposition at bay. Dearbhla deserves particular mention as she played an excellent game having come straight from her sick bed. In the second half it was Holycross despite the wind dying down who missed a number of clear-cut chances. The final whistle blew, a 0-0 draw and a fair result for both sides on the day. This is the first match in the third round of the league with Rathkeale and Murroe left to play. The team on the day were: Marian Quade, Jessica Murphy, Katie Meade, Anna Bonar, Molly Patterson, Nella O’Regan, Gillian Coleman, Caoimhe O’Brien, Maria Cronin, Lucy Noonan and Dearbhla Egan. Well done girls.
Girls Under 12s – League Champions
The girls had their first home match of 2009 against local rivals Bruff on February 22nd and this was a most eagerly anticipated meeting with both sides were very well supported on the day. Holycross lined out with Avelina Hynes in goal, Patricia Hanley, Martina Madden and Amanda Meade the back three, Hazel Connolly and Rachel Madden in midfield and Claire Bermingham and Megan O'Brien up front. Thankfully weather conditions were good for the 1.00pm kick off. Both teams started well and were pretty evenly matched for the first ten minutes but then Holycross clicked up a gear. Hazel and Rachel were working hard as usual in midfield and were combining with Megan and Claire to make life difficult for Bruff. They were rewarded with a beautifully struck goal from Claire on the fifteenth minute. The Bruff supporters were slightly stunned when Megan added a second a few moments later. Yet again this forward partnership were delivering the goods big time. Patricia was in great form in defence and together with the ever dependable duo of Martina and Amanda made sure that Avelina only had to make one save in the first half.
The first twenty minutes went by in a blur and the girls ran off for a well deserved break. As always there were plenty of top class players on the bench ready to join the battle, bibs were swapped and a new look team ran on to start the second half. Megan put on the goalie's jersey, Rebecca O'Brien and Katie O'Donnell joined Martina in defence. The Ryan sisters Leah and Adah had rushed from a basketball match in Athea to play their part, Leah joined Avelina in midfield while Adah went up front with Claire. It really is a great advantage for the managment to have such a strong panel of players. If anyone thought a two goal cushion would see the girls backing off they were greatly mistaken. The search for more goals continued. To be fair to Bruff they didn't let the two goal disadvantage get to them and showed great determination to keep our strikers at bay while keeping Meg awake with some good shots on the Holycross goal. One particular attack led to appeals for a penalty from a Meanus based Bruff supporter for a perceived infringement by our keeper, this man was obviously a lunatic and his appeal was dismissed by the excellent ref. Leah's trip from west Limerick was fully justified when after a wonderful passage of play by Avelina and herself she fired home the third and final goal of the day. Bruff kept attacking and but for the excellent work of Becky and Katie were sure to have threatened Meg's goal. Adah and Claire did their best to add to the goal tally but despite a skilful display couldn't beat the Bruff keeper again. The final whistle brought great cheers from the many Holycross supporters and everyone rushed to congratulate the girls. This was without a doubt the best team performance of the season and a fitting way to clinch the league title. The managment team couldn't be more proud of these fantastic girls. Thanks to the Bruff girls and mentors John and Pat for a great game. It was nice to see such a good turnout of supporters for both teams, the girls work hard and deserve the encouragement. Club News Best wishes from all at the club to A team Captain Fantastic Niall Hourigan who has just departed on a round-the-world trip. Niall is currently in Singapore where he informs us (through the medium of Facebook!) that he is losing more perspiration walking around in the heat than he did in most Cross training sessions! We wish him well. Welcome back to Under 11 striker Kyle Dillon from his recent trip to Paris, where we hear a number of clubs expressed interest. Mom Mary has assured the Cross committee that the rumours are not true, Kyle is staying put at the Cross! This Week’s Fixtures No underage fixtures published, but all please contact your managers towards weekend. Supporter Of The Week Eileen Finn - for her endless supply of oranges for all players and managers of the Girls U10 Green Team (or Dream Team!) at Rathkeale, thanks Eileen. Players Of The Week Boys – Graham Whelan with a last gasp equalizer versus Rathkeale in a thriller on Wednesday evening. Girls – Dearbhla Egan for the Girls U10 Red squad, a terrific performance on Saturday last Goal Of The Week Dean Coughlan - for Boys 13s, another Coughlan classic! Holycross Soccer Club Notes March 22nd 2009 This Weekend’s Fixtures: Underage: Saturday 28-March’09; Under 13 Boys Cup First Round: Holycross V Herbertstown @ 11am in Holycross Under 15 Boys Cup First Round: Holycross V Hospital @ 12.30pm in Holycross Sunday 29-March’09; Under 11 Boys Cup First Round:Holycross V Charleville @ 5pm in Holycross Under 10 Girls Denny Gold Medal Premier: Holycross V @ Murroe in Murroe @ 4pm U10 Premier Girls Rathkeale V’s Holycross U10 Premier Girls squad travelled to Rathkeale on Sunday for our third and final meeting in the League. Rathkeale sitting well ahead at the top of the league were certainly the favourites at the start of the match. However, the first half was certainly dominated by Holycross play. Anna Bonar 10 minutes into the game was rewarded after a series of shots on goal to give the cross a 1 Nil lead. Katie Meade and Maria Cronin mid field covered substantial ground throughout the match to keep feeding the ball to the forwards. Marian Quaid and Ide McCarthy were assisted in the backs by Jessica Murphy and Caoimhe O’Brien. The second half started off in much the same vain as the first with Holycross looking the more likely to score. However, 12 minutes into the second half of the game the cross backs forgot to communicate with each other and blocked the goalie’s view of play to allow Rathkeale come back into the game. Rathkeale upped the tempo somewhat but a more vocal Captain Marian and a determined Molly Patterson in goals saw off any real threats. Gillian Coleman and Lucy Noonan made valiant efforts on behalf of the squad while on the pitch. However, player of the match would have to go to Rebecca Bevan who showed sheer grit and determination to halt the advances of Rathkeale. Thanks to all the supporters who travelled to Rathkeale. Final score Rathkeale 1, Holycross 1. One final fixture remains in the league where we will be away to Murroe. Holycross Soccer Club Notes March 1st 2009 This Weekend’s Fixtures: Underage: Saturday 07-March’09; Under 10 Boys Cup First Round: Holycross V Ballylanders in Ballylanders @ 4pm Under 12 Boys Premier League: Holycross V Herbertstown in Holycross @ 11am Under 14 Boys Premier League: Holycross V Charleville in Holycross @ 1pm Under 16 Boys Premier Shield: Holycross V Cappamore in Holycross @ 3pm Sunday 08-March’09; Under 12 Girls Denny Gold Medal: Holycross V Charleville in Holycross @ 4pm Junior A V Shelbourne (Div 1B): Holycross A 1 – Coonagh 1. Another hard fought point here by Holycross who have been most unlucky since Christmas. Niall Brosnan & Ian Hogan starred for The Cross. Under 10 Girls (Green Squad) V Charleville: 1-1 This was a highly entertaining affair with the young mainly 7 & 8 years from Holycross proving that they are no lightweights when it comes to playing quality football, & contributiong 100% commitment. Missing a few of the stronger regulars didn’t have any impact of the Holycross performance. They controlled this game from the start & peppered the Charleville goal time after time with the talented Maire O’Leary controlling midfield. Her strong running, vision & ball control showed ability beyond her years. Katie Madden, Siobhan Meany & Shauna Ryan also showed plenty of enthusiasm as they reduced the opposition to the rare incursion into the Holycross half. The backline of Eva Butler, Ashling O’Brien & Katie Finn coped admirably with anything that came their way. Eve Ryan between the posts kept her defence focussed & on their toes with her constant communication. The second half was a more evenly contested affair with the stronger Charleville outfit coming to the fore. However, it was the Cross who took control of proceedings with a goal from Siobhan Meany & what a goal it was. This was a textbook finish to the top corner that would make Goal of the Season in any Premier League not to mention at this level. However, as the last 10 minutes came Charleville got into the game as the smaller Cross team began to tire. Charleville scored the equaliser with 5 minutes remaining. Cross tried valiantly to sneak a winner but it wasn’t to be on the day. Indeed, without a fantastic save by Eve Ryan with a few minutes to go, Holycross could have been regretting their missed opportunities during their first half dominance even more. The younger members of the squad, Ashling Hehir & Ciara Hynes also made a valuable contribution & gave 100% when introduced. Both have certainly given the coaches plenty to think about when the next games comes around as they looked totally comfortable in their respective full back positions & had no issue with their larger opponents thwarting any attack that came their way. Lauren Mason made an impressive debut for the Cross & as the game went on she grew in confidence & excelled against her opponent. Definitely a star in the making. Overall a fine performance & the most pleasing aspect was the workrate of all who definitely played as a team all afternoon & covered every blade of grass in both defence & attack. They were a tired team as they made their way from the pitch & deserved every bit of the standing ovation that they received as the final whistle went. The smiles on the proud parent’s faces were broader than the players. Thanks to Charleville for their welcome, hospitality & for a sporting & entertaining game throughout on a excellent surface. A rarity at this time of the year. Also to the Charleville referee who was impartial & diligent throughout. Not a nice job at any time & I’m guessing he would have preferred to be on the line watching like everyone else. Under 10 Girls Premier V Kilmallock 0-0. U10 Premier Girl’s team took to the pitch against Kilmallock on Sunday 1st March on home turf. It has to be said the pitch conditions were anything but ideal but none-the-less the girls were ready to brave the elements. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a home referee and had to prevail on our Opponents Kilmallock to do the needful. Thanks to Tony for stepping in on short notice. The game was hotly contested from the outset and was a hugely entertaining match for the spectators. The first half the strong breeze was in Kilmallock's favour and they had a few good scoring chances. However, the steady hands of Dearbhla Egan in goals for the cross denied them their chances. Dearbhla deserves particular mention as she played and excellent game having come straight from her sick bed. In the second half it was Holycross despite the wind dying down who missed a number of chances at goal. The final whistle blew and it was a nil all draw. A fair result for both sides on the day. Under 13 Boys V St Davids: 2-2. Holycross started well in this encounter. David Breen converted from a Chris Brown corner. Graham Whelan then took a quick free kick to Dean Coughlan who chipped the keeper & Darragh Glynn was on hand to make it two. However at the start of the second half, St.Davids scored from a set piece to make it 2-1. Plenty opportunites came Holycross’ way to build on their tally but St.Davids’s scored from a second set piece in the last minute. Some poor concentration during opposition free kicks meant that 2 points were lost. Good contributions on the day from Anthony Neilan & Graham Whelan.
Under 15 Boys V Meanus: 6-1. It was an even first half with neither side yielding in this local derby. However, the second half turned into a more lively & entertaining affair when Niall O’Riordan flicked the ball over the advancing Meanus ‘keeper to net first for Holycross. Dean Coughlan doubled the advantage soon after with a well taken goal resulting from a one two between Niall O’Riordan & himself. Jason Lenihan made it 3 & then Niall O’Riordan popped up the knock in another 3 to make it 6. Meanus probably scored the goal of the day after a well worked move. In truth the result flattered the Cross as Meanus matched the Cross for most of the game. Thanks to Dean Coughlan who came straight from an Under 13 game to play. New Training Grounds The club continues to seek new training grounds and is appealing to any local land owners who might consider selling the necessary acreage (or long lease). Holycross Soccer Club Notes February 23rd 2009 Holycross are League Champions Denny Gold Medal Under 12 Girls First Div V Bruff: Sunday 22.02.09. The girls had their first home match of 2009 against local rivals Bruff. This was an eagerly anticipated meeting and both sides were very well supported on the day. Niall Brosnan scored the Holycross goal. Peter Murphy was outstanding in goals once again & dealt admirabley with anything that came his way. The fight to stay in Div.1B now begins & with attitude & training there is no reason why Holycross can’t commence a charge up the table. Junior B VParkville (Div 4): A 1-0 loss despite having the lions share of possession that unfortunately could not be converted into scores. All worked hard but chances need to be availed of at this level. Under 14 Boys V Kilmallock: Holycross played well but conceeded early in the second half. Unfortunately, they then had top start chasing the game & conceeded a second soon after. Niall O’Riordan then popped up to score from the edge on the edge of the box & buried the ball to the bottom left hand corner of the net. Game on as Holycross charged forward. Appeals for a penalty soon after were dismissed by the match official as Dean Coughlan was upended in the box. Within minutes Klmallock notched up their third. Again, a great display by Holycross & with a bit of luck & a few 50:50 decisions going their way, the result may have been much different. Under 16 Boys V Glenview: This game looked to be over after 10 minutes as Holycross went 2-0 & were coasting to victory with goals from Niall O’Riordan & Ryan Glynn to set them on their way. However, complacency set in & Glenview soon overturned a 2 goal deficit into a 2 goal advantage. John Casey then resumed the Holycross challenge after a superb cross from Niall O’Riordan to make it 4-3. The same provider was then upended in the box & cooled dusted himself down, stepped up & slotted home the equaliser. 4-4 was the final result & was enjoyed by all who came to see. Under 12 Girls Denny Gold Medal League: Sunday 08-February’09 With only two training sessions to their credit since the new year started thanks to "global warming" the 'cross girls headed to Kilmallock for their first competitive encounter of 2009. The day had started white due to an overnight snowfall but thankfully the sun came out to bathe the pitch and those on it come the 3.00pm kick off. With a good turn out of travelling supporters cheering them on the girls took to the field. Rachel Madden started in the unusual for her keepers jersey, Amanda Meade, Martina Madden and Captain Michelle Griffin lined out in defence, Patricia Hanley and Hazel Connolly in midfield and the familiar pairing of Claire Bermingham and Megan O'Brien up front. With the talent of Maria Moloney, Leah and Adah Ryan, Avelina Hynes, Rebecca O'Brien and Katie O'Donnell on the bench there was a confident air about the place.
Holycross had earned a positive result in the last encounter with Kilmallock but if the girls thought this was going to be a handy one they had another thing coming. Right from the off the pace was ferocious. Hazel and Patricia were battling hard in midfield to feed the girls up front and with Claire and Megan they laid siege to the Kilmallock goal. Try as they might though the Kilmallock defence kept them out. The forwards in green were also in the mood for action and regularly threatened our defence with some great play. Martina was as safe as always in center back and showed great energy and determination to close down attack after attack. Michelle and Amanda were taking care of the wing forwards and made sure Rachel didn't have much work to do between the posts. Half time arrived scoreless and was a welcome relief to the players and supporters, this was high energy stuff.
Claire who was showing no ill effects from an injury picked up in training Friday night was given a breather of sorts between the posts, Leah took over from her in left forward with Avelina replacing Megan in the other strikers position. Becky took over from Amanda in defence. Adah and Rachel gave Hazel and Patricia a break in midfield. With water and words of encouragement taken onboard the battle recommenced. The sun shone down on another half of tough but fair play from both sets of players. Nil all was looking like the outcome when Kilmallock topped off an excellent passage of play with a rocket past Hazel who had only just replaced Claire in goal. No fault of Hazel's, Shay Given wouldn't have stopped it. It's not the most sought after position on the pitch but fair play to Hazel, Claire and Rachel who did a great job guarding the net. Now was the time for the big performance if we were going to save a point from this. Conceding the goal and the very real possibility of the first defeat of their league campaign banished the last of the winter cobwebs and a more familiar urgency appeared. Katie and Maria had joined Martina in defence and shut down that area. Megan had rejoined Claire in midfield and they combined with Leah and Avelina to throw everything they had at the Kilmallock goal. With about eight minutes to go they were rewarded with a spectacular goal from Claire to level it, much to the relief of manager's and supporters. The girls kept up the pressure and Leah was unlucky not to score when she thumped the upright with a minute to go. Neither team deserved to lose and I think both sides would agree the draw was a fair result. Everyone played their part in this thrilling match but two players in particular showed great guts and not for the first time deserve a special mention, Martina Madden was a giant in the back line and covered every inch of the pitch and Claire Bermingham who ran herself into the ground as always and scored another wonderful goal to keep us unbeaten in seven games. Martina & Claire are the Holycross players of the match. Thanks to the Kilmallock girls and managment for a great match. Also our faithful band of supporters who make the effort to come and cheer on these fantastic girls.
Under 12 Boys V Herbertstown: Saturday 07-February’09 The Under 12’s made the trip to nearby Herbertstown last Saturday. Cross started well but failed to score from any of the chances created. Herbertstown went ahead when the ball rebounded off the crossbar & they were quicker to react. Cross were very unlucky Not to equalise in the second half creating plenty chances but could not convert them. Herbertstown got their second afer a goalmouth scramble. This was a very entertaining & exciting game with some great displays from Pat Maher in goals, Colm Nichol & Aaron O’Hanlon outfield.
Under 10 Boys V Rathkeale: Saturday 07-February’09 U10 boys were away to Rathkeale at 3pm on Saturday 7th Feb. Due to pitch conditions and other fixtures in Rathkeale the boys played on Rathkeale’s enviable All-Weather-Pitch. The cross just managed to field a team due to illness and no-shows on the day. Stephen Power made some good saves but at half time the cross was trailing 4-0. Luke O’Brien-May and Connor Dooley fed the ball from their mid-field positions but our forwards were no match for the Rathkeale defence. Cian Moloney stepped into goals in the second half and despite best efforts conceded another two goals. Bob Noonan and Timothy McSweeney both played well but the Holycross boys were no match for Rathkeale. The need for training was most evident from the Cross side. The game ended 6-0 to Rathkeale.
Under 14 Boys V Galbally: Saturday 07-February’09 The Under 12’s travelled to Galballyon Saturday last. The game went ahead after a pitch inspection. Still 0-0 at half time, Holycross commenced the second half in determined mood. Niall O’Riordan was upended in the box, got up, dusted himslf down & converted the spot kick to make it 1-0 to the Cross. He doubled his tally a few minutes later when he slipped through two tackles to slot the ball to the back of the net. Dean Coughlan worked his magic for Niall’s hat-trick after his jinked his way past two players to supply a pin-point cross for Niall to slot home. However, complacency set in & Galbally brought the score back to 3-2 but the Holycross rearguard held out for a hardfought victory. Best for Holycross were James Torpey, Chris Keane, Shane Irwin & Niall O’Riordan.
Under 10 Gilrls V Rathkeale: Sunday 08-February’09 U10 Premier Girls Team were at home to Rathkeale on Saturday 7th February. Although the ground was a little hard in parts it was a lot kinder than the weather we had experienced in our away match to the same team where a life raft close by would have been reassuring. Dearbhla Egan in goals for the cross in the first half made some excellent saves. At half time it was Nil all and the sides were evenly matched. Molly Patterson switched positions with Dearbhla in the second half and she too made some excellent saves. However, Rathkeale’s determination and no off side rule, 10 mins into the second half were ahead by a goal. Lucy Noonan was unfortunate not to get an equaliser as was Marie Cronin. Katie Meade and Anna Bonar both had excellent games. Final score 1-0 to Rathkeale. Thanks to Brian for his referee skills called on at short notice and to Maurice for his linesman duties.

Holycross Soccer Club Notes January 18th 2009 A & B Junior Teams: The A’s had no game scheduled & the B game was cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions over the weekend. However, a stringent training session on Sunday morning was well attended & a spring in the step was obvious. Let’s hope it’s a positive sign for the future. Under 15’s Pallasgrean 2 – Holycross 7 This was an awesome display & comprehensive victory from the complete Holycross panel even albeit in extreme weather conditions. J.P. Guiney, Niall O’Riordan, Chris O’Riordan & Shane Irwin were outstanding for the ‘Cross. Scorers on the day were Jason Lenihan who contributed an unbelievable four goals. Ryan Glynn chipped in with a brace & that man again John Casey who at this stage must be the tenth consecutive game that he has scored in brought the tally to seven. Under 12’s National Cup Holycross 2 – Abbeyfeale 2 (Match abandoned at the midway point due to conditions) This match went ahead after a pitch inspection but conditions deteriorated so much that the referee was left with no alternative but to abandon proceedings at half time. Joe Power & Sean Finn scored for the Cross. Sean Finn, Chris Brown & Aaron O’Hanlon were best for Holycross on the day. The U12’s were under the instruction of Denis Flavin & John Walsh for the day & this experienced combination are optimistic of an extened cup run this season. The following is the full first round draw for all Cross teams: 10s away to Ballylanders B 11s home to Charleville B 12s away to Ballylanders 13s home to Herbertstown 14s home to Charleville A 15s home to Hospital 16s home to Croom

Weekly Awards Player of the week – Jason Lenihan who scored 4 for the Under 15s (watch this space, this lad's heading places). Goal of the week – Joe Power for the Under 12’s Keeper of the week – Andrew Barron for the Under 15’s in dreadful conditions. Defender of the week – J.P. Guiney for the Under 15’s Supporter of the week – Esther Casey who braved the elements in Pallasgrean last Saturday & also drove the “Team Bus”. Your help was very much appreciated.
Quotes of the week: “I’d say it might rain” - sarcastic comment last Saturday morning during Under 12 game as it was being abandoned. “What’s a weesession Daddy?” - Little eavesdropper queries an adult doom & gloom conversation during U12 game last weekend. “Put in an effort lads” - shout from the sideline………Where’s the heifer Daddy? Same nosey child!! Holycross Soccer Club Notes January 9th 2009 A & B Junior Teams: The A team lost to Caledonians in the League by four goals to two. Again a brave performance but poor defending contributed to their downfall. Conditions were blustery & Holycross played against a strong wind for the first half. After only a minute goalie Peter Murphy had to pick the ball out of the net after a mix up in the Cross defense. 5 minutes later Niall Brosnan scored a well taken goal from outside the box 1-1 & game on. Cals went ahead again from a set piece when their no.9 scored his second with a looping header-2-1 at the break. Cross started the 2nd half like the start of the game & were down 3-1 after a couple of minutes from another set piece. They managed to pull another back after a well worked corner from Niall Brosnan who managed to make the keeper spill the ball onto his own team mate for an own goal.....sheer brilliance!! Cross dominated the rest of the half with Dermot Hickey playing a stormer and fellow veterans Paul Moloney and Ian Hogan playing their part. But we could not turn our possession into goals and Cals sealed it with a breakaway goal 5mins from the end. Cross deserved a draw despite the result. Best for the Cross on the day were Hickey, Brosnan & Philip McNamara who had a good solid display at right full. Attendance has been very good at training & great credit to Dermot Hickey for his hard work. Hopefully we will reap the benefit in the coming weeks. The B team game was cancelled. Under 14s The Under 14’s were beaten 3-0 by a sharper Herbertstown team in Holycross on Saturday. It was the first game for the Cross since Christmas & it showed. Best for Holycross was Brendan O’Connell. Under 16s Missing a few regulars, this was never going to be an easy game versus Croom. Andrew Nagle, George Mullins & David Storan tried hard for the Cross with Andrew Barron outstanding in goals. John Casey scored the lone goal for the Cross. Welcome Back Paul Moloney and Ian Hogan, legends! Quotes of the week: “Sur we’re 300 miles away & we could still see twas a penalty. The ref is 5 feet away & he couldn’t” - Enthusiastic supporter questions the referee’s credentials during the recent Munster V Neath Swansea Ospreys game from the comfort of a local hostelry. “Close the gate to keep out the crows” shouted in jest to a Holycross B player at an away match recently. You won’t believe it but he actually carried out the instruction as well. “Did you hear my interview on the radio” comment by Holycross Manager after winning Cup Final many years ago. Reply “I did but they definitely won’t be putting you on the TV. Even if twas black & white & the arial turned backwards, ‘twouldn’t improve you!!” “Sir Walter Raleigh”…..didn’t he invent the bike? Barry Doherty asks in a quizzical manner. Reply, “No he was first to bring the potato into Ireland”. Barry’s reply, “I thought that was Sir Robert Peel”………… “Look there’s a Hamster Jet yoke”…..Hughie Flood points excitedly to the sky as he travelled from Liverpool to Manchester. “No Hughie, they’re called Harrier Jets” came the reply in unison. |
